Why Mentoring?
Youth participating in this program are at a crucial place in their lives. As they establish their own sense of self and feelings of individuality in the midst of potentially challenging life circumstances, these young people may find themselves in environments where they could be at risk of experimenting with impulsive or destructive behaviors. Research shows that children of prisoners are 5 to 6 times more likely than their peers to be incarcerated themselves.
We believe that all young people have the capacity to make positive choices. By altering their environment with the presence and support of a responsible adult mentor, these young people, as well as their mentors, have a great opportunity to develop their own capacity for a successful future.
Research shows that mentoring leads to positive results in children's lives. A few highlights of the research include improvements in relationships with parents, increased school attendance, higher grades, and a higher age of initiation of risky behaviors. Many studies suggest that results are strongest when programs use best practices. Our program adheres to the latest in quality standards and Boys & Girls Aid is accredited by several national agencies.
